Colorado Medicaid eConsult Is Ending August 31: What Cancer Patients Should Know
Colorado's state-supported Medicaid eConsult platform is shutting down on August 31, 2026. For Health First Colorado members navigating cancer care β especially in rural or underserved communities β here is what the change means and how to stay organized through the transition.
Colorado Medicaid eConsult Is Ending August 31: What Cancer Patients Should Know
Colorado's state-supported Medicaid eConsult platform β a tool that allowed primary care providers to consult with specialists on behalf of Health First Colorado members β will shut down on August 31, 2026.
For many patients, this change will go unnoticed. But for Health First Colorado members who are navigating a cancer diagnosis, especially those in rural or underserved communities, the end of this platform may mean additional coordination steps when accessing specialty care.
This post explains what the change means in plain language, who is most likely to be affected, and what you can do right now to stay organized.
Important: Beacon Cancer Navigation provides non-clinical, logistical support. We do not provide medical advice, determine Medicaid benefits or eligibility, or guarantee access to any particular provider or service. For questions about your specific coverage or benefits, contact Health First Colorado directly at 1-800-221-3943 or visit Colorado.gov/HCPF.
What Was the Colorado Medicaid eConsult Platform?
The eConsult platform was a digital tool that let primary care providers (PCPs) send structured clinical questions to specialists β without requiring a patient to travel to an in-person specialist appointment first.
For patients in rural Colorado or those with limited transportation, this was a meaningful access tool. A PCP in a small community could consult with an oncologist, hematologist, or other specialist electronically, and the patient could receive guidance without an immediate referral appointment.
The platform was funded through state and federal Medicaid dollars. As of August 31, 2026, that funding and infrastructure will no longer be in place.
Who Is Most Likely to Be Affected?
Not every Health First Colorado member will feel this change equally. The patients most likely to notice a difference include:
- Cancer patients in rural or frontier Colorado who relied on eConsult as a bridge to specialist input before traveling for an in-person appointment
- Patients whose PCPs used eConsult regularly to get oncology or hematology guidance as part of their care coordination
- Patients mid-referral who may have a pending eConsult in process as of August 31
If you are unsure whether your care team used this platform, the best step is to ask your primary care provider directly.
What This Does Not Mean
It is worth being clear about what this change does not mean:
- It does not mean your Medicaid coverage is ending. Health First Colorado coverage is not affected by this platform change.
- It does not mean you cannot see a specialist. Referrals to specialists are still available through your Health First Colorado plan. The process may simply require more direct coordination between your PCP and the specialist's office.
- It does not mean your current treatment is interrupted. If you are already established with an oncologist or specialist, your ongoing care relationship is not affected by this platform change.
What the Transition May Look Like in Practice
For patients who were benefiting from eConsult β particularly those in rural areas β the practical impact may be:
- More phone-based coordination between your PCP and specialist offices
- Longer timelines to get specialist input, depending on your provider's capacity and the specialist's availability
- More paperwork and follow-up tasks to track, including referral requests, prior authorizations, and appointment scheduling
None of these are insurmountable. But they do require organization β and that is exactly where Beacon Cancer Navigation can help.
How Beacon Cancer Navigation Can Help
Beacon Cancer Navigation provides independent, non-clinical logistical and supportive guidance for cancer patients and families. We do not replace your medical team, your insurance plan, or your Health First Colorado case manager.
What we can do is help you manage the administrative and organizational side of the transition:
Tracking referrals and follow-up tasks When a referral is submitted, there are often multiple follow-up steps β prior authorization requests, scheduling calls, records transfers, and confirmation of appointments. We help you keep track of what has been submitted, what is pending, and what needs a follow-up call.
Organizing provider and specialist contact information Knowing who to call β and having the right phone numbers, fax numbers, and reference numbers in one place β saves significant time and reduces the risk of things falling through the cracks.
Following up on medical records and referral documentation Specialist offices frequently need records from your PCP before they can schedule an appointment. We help you understand what has been sent, what may still be needed, and how to follow up if documentation is delayed.
Identifying transportation and lodging resources For patients in rural Colorado who now need to travel for in-person specialist appointments, transportation and lodging assistance programs exist β but they require research and application. We help identify what is available and what you may qualify for.
Keeping appointments and outstanding tasks organized in the Beacon Care Command Centerβ’ Our Care Command Centerβ’ is a structured organizational system that keeps every appointment, task, contact, and document in one place β so nothing gets lost during a complex care transition.
Helping you prepare questions for your healthcare team or Health First Colorado If you are unsure how this change affects your specific situation, we can help you prepare a list of clear, organized questions to bring to your next PCP appointment or to your Health First Colorado case manager.
Steps to Take Before August 31
If you are a Health First Colorado member currently navigating cancer care, here are practical steps to take before the platform ends:
- Ask your PCP whether they have used eConsult as part of your care and whether any consultations are pending
- Confirm your specialist referrals are in process and have been submitted through your plan's standard referral process
- Request copies of any eConsult records that may be relevant to your ongoing care β ask your PCP's office to provide these before August 31
- Contact Health First Colorado at 1-800-221-3943 to understand your plan's referral process and what to expect going forward
- Get organized β if you do not already have a system for tracking your referrals, appointments, and outstanding tasks, now is a good time to put one in place
A Note on Rural Cancer Care in Colorado
Colorado has made meaningful investments in rural health access over the years, and the eConsult platform was one of those investments. Its end is a real loss for some communities.
At the same time, the patients most affected β those in rural and underserved areas navigating cancer β are often the ones with the fewest organizational resources and the most to manage. That is the gap Beacon Cancer Navigation was built to help fill.
If you are navigating a cancer diagnosis in Colorado and you are concerned about how this change may affect your care access, we are here to help you think through the logistics.
